Own Your Story Unashamedly!

Because there is no guilt or embarrassment in your journey. It is yours.

And you won’t be you without it.

More so it has a life of its own.

Years ago, my manager noticed that I seemed to withdraw into myself after my work got critiqued by my team.

One day, he called me aside and shared his observation with me.

There was no denying it. He was spot on. I knew.

I am typically quite meticulous about my work and so having people literally tear it apart even in the most loving way would always break my heart.

So he said, “Dapo, let your work take the beating and not yourself”.

It took a while but eventually, I got it.

I had a new understanding.

Everything I create, every work that I produce has a life of its own.

While inside me, it is a part of me but once delivered it is complete and independent.

I need to allow it to grow in whatever direction it has inexplicably chosen.

And when it needs to get flogged, it has a life of its own.

When like gold, it needs to undergo purification, I need to allow it.

Because it has a life of its own.

And if I need to be the one to set its furnace on fire, my work has a life of its own.

I will do it.

Because even if it dies.

It will grow again.

Because it has a life of its own.

So also do stories.

Our stories are us.

Yet they take on a life of their own.

When they connect with the mind of a reader.

There they do amazing works that the storyteller will perhaps never know.

But then, the storyteller must own his or her story.

And tell it all; the good, the bad and the ugly.

The tears, the scars and the prizes are all a part of your story.

We must own them and share them without shame.

Because they are what makes up our life DNA.

They are our uniqueness.

Even when others do not understand us.

Share them anyway.

Just like I do.

And it doesn’t have to be a long story.

You can be like Earnest Hemingway who shared a story in six words.

“For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.”

It may have connected with only a handful of people.

A lot more may never understand.

And that is perfectly fine.

Because it really doesn’t matter.

Your story is not meant for everybody.

It is for just one person.

That soul that is meant to hear it at that moment in time.

Just own your story.

Share your story.

The scars and the stars alike.

Embrace your story.

And even when others may never understand, share it anyway!
