“You will never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of our success is in our daily routine.”John C. Maxwell
Lifestyle redefined. When you come to a new country as an immigrant, it is your opportunity to rewrite the story of your life and restart, no matter at what age you make that move. How many people in the world get that chance?
Lifestyle is when you’re able to do what you want, when you want it and where you want it without having to worry about money or time to do so. A more generic definition of lifestyle is that it is the way in which a person lives.
One of the biggest mistakes we make as immigrants is to build our business or career without having a clearly thought-out picture of the kind of lifestyle, we desire for ourselves and our families. Failure to re-evaluate and define how we want to live our lives will only leave us frustrated and unfulfilled irrespective of the success we may be able to achieve.
As immigrants we are not here on vacation. We can rethink, redesign, refocus and rewrite our new life.
The best way to redesign our new life as an immigrant is to have a clear picture of the life we want to pursue. The money we make from the jobs we do is not the harvest but the seed for that life. What you sow is what you reap; and it applies to our life too. Think of it this way: do you buy a car before you decide where you want to go, or do you decide on the purpose of owning a vehicle and what kind of vehicle will serve your desires and then go make that purchase?
Because we are immigrants and we are not here on vacation, we can rethink, redesign, refocus and rewrite our new life. We don’t have to rush back, and we have the time to chart this course more mindfully than when we were in our countries of origin.
When it comes to building a new life, the two major things that play a part are time and money. There are three things you can do with time and money: spend it, waste it or use it. While money can keep coming back, the time will never come back. We may make all the money we want but we might not have the time needed to enjoy life. In that sense, time and money are not the same. However, they can work in tandem to create the life that you want.
Your “You, Incorporated” is the vehicle that will take you to the lifestyle you desire. You need to ask yourself if what you’re doing right now is the best use of your time, in creating the lifestyle you want for yourself and your family.
Being an immigrant gives you the chance to re-frame your lifestyle.
Take a good look.
And make those changes.
