Too good to be true. But it happened.
Dapo was scheduled for an interview in a leading organization for a much desired job. This was at a point in time in his immigrant life journey that he was on the verge of despair! This interview was his chance to break through. When he reached the company premises, he was told by a lady at the reception that the Hiring Manager was out on an official emergency and that he, with the others will get an email for a rescheduled meeting. He was disappointed but wasn’t keen to take a quick leave. He decided to hang around to learn more about the company and its operations. The lady at the reception fed his curiosity and soon, they were engaged in an enlightening conversation. He got enough information about his would-be employer and she got enough insight about this personable job-seeker who came across as a boisterous young man who possessed the right amount of curiosity to get the technical jobs done!
Turns out this impromptu conversation was what earned him the job. The lady at the reception recommended Dapo to the Hiring Manager. And Dapo got the job.
For Dapo, it wasn’t part of his game plan, afterall, the lady wasn’t his interviewer and he didn’t think she could influence anything. He was just being himself. In effect, the lady he had random conversation with got impressed enough to give an impressive assessment of who she thought he was.
This is a rare lucky incident that worked for Dapo. But there are lessons to be learned here.
- Your soft skills are as important as your hard skill sets. Hone both skills!
- Be your positive self. Always.
- Be curious.
- Engage in conversations.
Like Walt Disney said: “We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths”
